The Boys' Brigade 1st Saltcoats Company
The object of the Boys' Brigade is "The advancement of Christ's Kingdom among boys and the promotion of habits of obedience, reverence, discipline, self-respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness".Our Company meets on Friday nights in the church halls between 5.30 and 9.30 pm, commencing in September and finishing in May. Company Section Entry to the section is open to boys of secondary school age. In an attempt to achieve this goal boys are requested to attend regularly, and on time, with their uniforms, ready to participate in the SectionÕs activities. Friday nights are the main nights of activities commencing with the fall in, roll call, a short opening service and then inspection. The remainder of the evening is spent on instruction and practical work for their badges and awards. At present we follow a programme that includes the following topics: - Christian Faith, Drill, First Aid, Safety, Crime Prevention, Communications, Leadership, Physical Recreation, Local History and Knowledge. Boys are encouraged to take part in swimming, football, badminton, chess and personal hobbies and to bring forward ideas for addition to our programme. During the session our Company takes part in Battalion competitions, such as Christian Faith, Drill, Football, Swimming, First Aid, Badminton, Table Tennis, Chess, Cross Country and a Quiz, where the boys not only compete against other Companies, but learn to meet and mix with boys out with their own group. These competitions take place on weeknights and weekends at venues throughout North Ayrshire. The North Ayrshire Battalion holds a Biannual Camp under canvas and boys are encouraged to attend what have been in the past very successful and happy events. It is hoped to expand our programme by introducing new topics. However, in order to achieve these ends it is imperative that we have more leaders, instructors and helpers. As can be seen we try to provide the boys with challenges, knowledge, pleasure and a guide to a Christian and responsible way of life but more could be done if new help and new ideas were added to what we already have in our Company. Company Section Officer in Charge Jim Maxwell Tel 01294 602239 Junior Section This section is open to all boys from Primary 4 to Primary 7, and meets on Friday nights from 6.30 to 8.00 pm in St Cuthbert's Church Hall, Saltcoats. The boys take part in various activities including football, badminton, game and even swimming. We also have less energetic activities such as painting, crafts, general knowledge, bible knowledge, singing and figure marching. Each night we try to take part in a good selection of the above. Any boy who wishes to come along and try us out will be made most welcome. We meet on Friday evening from 5.30 to 6.30. The main aim of our group is to have lots of fun. We have games, stories, singing and arts and crafts.
